Obesity rises in European children

IF EUROPEANS still think obesity is largely an American problem, they had better think again. Childhood obesity in the European Union has ballooned by almost 50 per cent since the late 1990s, and if the present trend continues, 10 per cent of European children will be obese by 2010, more than double previous estimates.

The number of children in the EU classified as overweight rather than obese is expected to hit 26 million within four years. That is more than one-third of the child population (International Journal of Pediatric Obesity, vol 1, p 11).

Tim Lobstein of the International Association for the Study of Obesity in London and Youfa Wang of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, who conducted the study, blame changes in diet, a decrease in physical activity and too much time spent in front of computer or television screens.

San call on govt to stop illegal sale of hoodia

The San community has called on the governments of South Africa, Switzerland and Germany to stop the illegal and unscrupulous sale of products made from the hoodia plant.

The indigenous plant has traditionally been used by the San as an appetite suppressant and is currently being developed by Unilever, a consumer goods company, into an anti-obesity drug. The San have signed two profit-sharing agreements for hoodia, but neither has yielded any revenue for the community.

Roger Chennells, a lawyer for the South African San Institute, says the patent rights for hoodia are owned by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the San have six percent right to the royalty based on the intellectual property which is their traditional knowledge.

The San are protected by law, but Chennells says "there are free-loaders who have jumped on the bandwagon of the knowledge that hoodia is the only organic and safe appetite suppressant known in the world”. Chennells says there are products in the market which do not contain hoodia, but claim they do.

SA government asked to protect hoodia

Chennells urged the government to talk to US and European governments to make sure that the products that are flooding their markets are scrutinised. Chennells says government must ensure that hoodia does not get a bad name from other products which claim to be hoodia.

Chennells says there are products which have real hoodia but are obtaining it illegaly by poaching or stealing from farms in the Northern Cape. In certain parts of the province hoodia has become extinct.

San Cry Foul Over Hoodia Trade

Wezi Tjaronda
Windhoek

San communities in southern Africa have urged governments of Switzerland, Germany and South Africa to act against the illegal sale of Hoodia products.

While the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) stipulates that indigenous groups be given a share of the profits from the commercial use of local genetic resources and traditional knowledge, the San are yet to benefit from the many Hoodia products that are being sold in Germany and Switzerland.

The San people, found in Namibia, South Africa, Angola and Botswana have known and used Hoodia, a succulent plant, for over 100 years as an appetite suppressant.

The plant was however patented a few years ago by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and licensed for further development to a British company, which in turn sold additional licenses to drug company Pfizer, and later to Unilever.

The San of Southern Africa, represented by the Working Group of Indigenous Minorities in Southern Africa (WIMSA) and other organisations, namely Boiwatch, Berne Declaration and the Church Development Service have written to the governments of South Africa, Germany and Switzerland to stem the trade in Hoodia, which they say is an illegally acquired resource.

In a letter to ministers of the three countries, the organisations said the intended solution would be to only suppress the illegal sale of Hoodia products but also establish a structure that prevents the biopiracy of many other generic resources as well.

In the letter, Wimsa's Roger Channels urged the countries to take "long overdue steps against the continued trade of Hoodia plants and products without the return of benefits to the San - the holders of the traditional knowledge about the plant".

He said a recent inquiry found that more than 10 Hoodia products are on sale in stores and pharmacies in Germany and Switzerland.

The products are marketed in Germany, Switzerland, France and the UK as Hoodia, Hoodia Kapsel, Hoodia Plus and Hoodia L10. On the Internet, the product is marketed as a super pill that naturally suppresses one's appetite.

"Almost all sellers/distributors market their product with reference to the traditional knowledge of the San. In other countries too, notably the UK and US, there is brisk trade in Hoodia products," he said, adding that while this is the case, the San have yet to receive a single penny from the trade.

CSIR and the San Council three years ago signed a benefit sharing formula while a second such agreement was signed between the San and the Hoodia Growers Pty Ltd in early February this year.

Channels said through the CSIR agreement, only the license holders, Phytopharm UK and Unilever have legitimate access to the knowledge and generic resource but for the moment, the license holders are not selling any Hoodia products.

And while the Hoodia growers market the product saying the owners of the traditional knowledge benefit from the growing of Hoodia, WIMSA says this is not the case.

"Therefore all Hoodia products currently on the market are not part of the above-mentioned two San benefit sharing agreements. The San have not negotiated Benefit Sharing Agreement with anyone except the CSIR and the South African Hoodia Growers. It seems safe to conclude that all commercially traded Hoodia products contain illegally acquired resources and traditional knowledge according to CBD," reads the letter in part.

So far, said the letter, no user country has made any move to stop the sale of these products.

The letter also notes that the two countries that were involved in drafting the Bonn Guideline were not implementing the guidelines which state that contracting parties should take appropriate legal, administrative, or policy measures, which should include preventing the use of genetic resources obtained without prior informed consent and also to address infringements of access and benefit sharing agreements.

The organisation urged the countries to "take seriously their obligations as user countries to initiate appropriate legal, administrative or policy measures to stop the sale of Hoodia products in their countries in violation on CBD rules".

Childhood depression increases women obesity risk

A new study has found that depression and anxiety disorders during childhood may increase the risk of obesity during adulthood for women but not men.

The study, by a team of researchers led by Sarah E. Anderson, M.S., from Tufts University, was carried out on a group of 820 people - 403 women and 417 men - who were assessed four times between 1983 and 2003. The participants ranged in age from 9 to 18 years at the beginning of the study, and were 28 to 40 years old at the most recent assessment.

The researchers evaluated the association between anxiety disorders and depression and weight gain from childhood into adulthood.

As a part of the study, they interviewed the individuals to determine whether they met clinical criteria for anxiety disorders or depression, and calculated BMI-for-age (BMI z scores), that correspond to growth chart percentiles and allow for tracking a child's relative weight through adolescence, by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters and adjusting it for age and gender based on national reference data.

The team found that 310 participants - 119 men and 191 women -had anxiety disorders and 148 - 50 men and 98 women - were depressed, and that women with anxiety disorders had significantly higher BMI z scores than women of the same age and socioeconomic status without the condition.

They also found that women with a history of depression, and those who had developed depression at a younger age, were heavier than women without depression, and also those who had developed depression later.

The researchers now suggest that treating anxiety and depression in girls and women may be one strategy in the battle against obesity.

"Our results suggest that efforts to improve mental health in populations may also help prevent female obesity," they said.

Two More Studies Link Sugary Drinks to Obesity

You simply have to read this fabulous article about how increasingly experts are linking consumption of soft drinks and other sugary drinks with obesity.

AP medical reporter Marilyn Marchione offers a great overview about how researchers hope to add evidence to the theory that sweet beverages are in fact the leading cause of obesity.

And this increasing amount of research actually could help scientists make the case for higher taxes on soft drinks, restrictions on how and where it they're sold and even possibly lead to a surgeon general's warning on labels, Marchione writes.

Not surprisingly, soda spokesmen claim that comparing soda and obesity to tobacco and lung cancer is a baseless crusade.

But top obesity researchers at prestigious institutions like Harvard and Yale believe that the research is irrefutable.

"There are many different lines of evidence, just like smoking," said Harvard pediatrician Dr. David Ludwig, who recommends a "fat tax" on fast food and drinks.

Study: soda leading cause of obesity

By Salome Eguizabal

Stephen Torgrimson claims he doesn’t have a soda drinking problem.

The sophomore biology major has at least one soda with every meal and usually one or two throughout the rest of the day. For Torgrimson, juice and milk can’t beat the real thing — for him, it’s always a Coke.

However, his girlfriend, sophomore biology major Cassie Erdeky, said Torgrimson has a serious soda addiction. She remembers a time when they went grocery shopping together and there was a huge sale on soda.

“He bought 10 12-packs of Coke, and they were gone within the month,” she said.

Maybe it’s time for Torgrimson to drop the soda and pick up a glass of milk.

According to studies released this week in several science journals, researchers argue that soda isn’t just related to obesity — it is the leading cause of the disease.

Nutrition experts have debated the effects of soda in the past, with some saying soda is another factor in weight gain.

Researchers from the recent studies want to present their findings to make a case for higher taxes on soda and restrictions to control where and how it is sold.

One suggestion includes placing a surgeon general’s warning on soda labels, similar to the warnings found on cigarettes.

Nutritionists at this university said they have not seen the study but believe obesity is caused by an imbalance in diet and lack of physical activity.

“There are no magic calories in soda that make it more harmful than any other drinks,” said Maureen Storey, director of the University’s Center for Food, Nutrition, and Agriculture Policy, a joint research center of with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Storey, who holds a Ph.D. in nutrition, has done research on the link between childhood obesity and access to soda machines in school but did not find any significant correlation.

The biggest problem with soda and soft drinks are the “empty calories,” or calories without nutritional value, said University Health Center Dietitian Jane Jakubczak.

“Sodas often replace other drinks, such as milk and fruit juices, which provide nutrients and vitamins,” she said.

Consuming soda is a problem for many college-aged students, primarily because many said they use it to stay awake to study.

“When students come in to see me about losing weight, the first thing I ask them is how much soda they are drinking,” Jakubczak said. “Some students are consuming more than 1,000 calories from soda on a daily basis.”

Junior chemical engineering major Lucy Legkodimova said she knows soda is unhealthy but still has at least a glass of soda a day. She said she needs the caffeine and would rather drink soda than coffee. She also drinks soda because other healthier drinks, such as milk, do not match with her diet.

“Soda is a junk food and I drink it whenever I eat other junk foods,” she added. “I would never eat pizza and drink milk. It just doesn’t make sense or taste right.”

Some students have already seen the impact of soda on their weight. Sophomore business major Irina Komarova gained 13 pounds last year and decided to cut all sugary drinks from her diet. She noticed a significant difference and now only drinks water.

“I never liked diet sodas, so drinking water works best for me. It leaves me feeling refreshed and clean,” she said, comparing it to the jittery feeling she gets from caffeinated drinks.

But nutritionists say students do not have to completely cut soda out of their diet to avoid weight gain.

“Soda can be a source of extra calories, but so can juice. The difference is that fruit juices offer nutrients,” Storey said. “This doesn’t mean that you can never have a can of pop. Just be mindful of the calories.”

Gillette's Fusion grabs 55% slice of new purchases

By Jeremy Grant in Washington

The American shaving male is proving that five blades are no barrier to growth in sales of razors, with Gillette's new Fusion product grabbing 55 per cent of new razor purchases only four weeks after launch.

Gillette's plans to add a fifth blade to razors were met with scepticism when they were unveiled last year.

But Gillette insisted that men were ready for five blades – and were willing to pay a premium for them as consumers increasingly "traded up" to better-performing consumer products.

Food and consumer goods companies are scrambling to revamp basic products to appeal to such higher-paying customers.

Clorox, a maker of bathroom cleaners, has produced a new type of plastic rubbish bag that it claims does not split. Unilever sells frozen, ready-made pasta dinners for two under its Bertolli brand that can be cooked in less than 10 minutes.

Gillette has spent millions of dollars on the launch, its most ambitious yet. It claims that 70 per cent of its customers who stock Gillette razors have committed to retail displays that will remain up for 3-6 months.

Fusion and a battery-powered, vibrating razor version called Fusion Power, are priced at a 30 per cent premium to Mach3, a three-blade product that cost 50 per cent more than its predecessor.

Data from Information Resources Inc, a consumer researcher, show that both Fusion products together accounted for over half of all purchases of complete new razor sets in the four weeks to February 19.

Gillette expects Fusion to be a $1bn brand within three years. Mach3 has generated retail sales since launch in 1998 of $16bn – equivalent to the entire gross domestic product of Uruguay.

Not to be outdone, rival razor maker Schick, owned by Energizer, will next month launch a new three-bladed razor for women, with the blades embedded in a "skin softening" strip containing aloe, cocoa butter and vitamin E.

Natural Herbal Skin Care

Natural herbal skin care has been the choice of beautiful women the world over for thousands of years. It has only been recently that cosmetic companies have formulated makeup and skin care products that contain chemicals and artificial additives in an effort to improve on the natural herbal skin care regimens that have been around for centuries.

But today many women have come to realize that these harsh chemicals and artificial ingredients that are so expensive aren’t necessarily good for their skin – in fact, in some cases they can cause drying and stripping of the skin’s natural pH balance and interfere with the body’s natural skin repair process. That’s why so many have returned to the natural herbal skin care routines that are based on some of the same key ingredients that might have been used by legendary beauties like Cleopatra or Marie Antoinette.

Some basic beauty secrets of the ages – natural herbal ingredients for skin care includes essential oils, rose water, crushed almonds, sea salts, rice powder, shea butter and purified water are common. These ingredients are good for the skin as rarely you will encounter any allergy to them. These natural ingredients can help to moisturize dry skin and contains cooling botanicals to promote the healing of blemishes and a complete skin care regimen. The benefits include slowing down the aging process and help to diminish those fine lines and crow’s feet.

Natural herbal skin care can be the answer if you have sensitive skin and are prone to rashes and or break-outs. Many people don’t realize that occasional flare-ups of blemishes or rashes can mean your skin is being irritated by the many chemicals in the soaps, cleansers, astringents and other products your skin is exposed to every day. Add to the list the many dyes, chemicals and preservatives in your makeup and it’s a virtual assault on your delicate skin.

That’s what makes natural herbal skin care so important as a part of your daily skin care routine. Using natural, soothing ingredients can actually calm and soothe your skin, reducing the number of break-outs and rashes. Soothing ingredients like oatmeal for sensitive skin calm itching and redness when rare flare-ups do occur due to environmental stressors.

Most natural skin products are full of natural botanicals, vitamins and minerals and pure anti-oxidants to nourish your skin, and are just as rich and creamy as any luxury department store skin care line. There is a whole range of products, from natural clay masks for acne to healing aloe gels for dry skin. Best of all, these does not contain the harsh chemicals that you can find in some other non-natural products.

By using natural herbal skin care products, you’re improving the condition of your skin and decreasing the likelihood of future skin problems.

Can aloe and probiotics help reverse IBS?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is a chronic condition characterized by abdominal pain, cramping, constipation, and diarrhea. According to the website www.ibsgroup.org IBS has been reported by 10 to 20% of the adult population of the United States and IBS symptoms are responsible for over 3 million visits each year to the doctor. It is considered one of the most common functional GI disorders with 70% of the sufferers being women.

According to the FDA, “Nearly all people with IBS can be helped, but no single treatment works for everyone. The first step is a personal evaluation of history, stress level and diet. People who can identify particular foods or types of stress that bring on the problem should avoid them. For most, especially those who tend to be constipated, regular physical activity helps keep the gastrointestinal tract functioning normally.”

“A substantial number of Americans with IBS have more severe symptoms that often do not respond to dietary or lifestyle changes alone. Drugs that slow the function of the gastrointestinal tract and are considered to be antispasmodics, such as Bentyl (dicyclomine hydrochloride), are frequently prescribed. Antidiarrheal drugs, such as Lomotil (diphenoxylate) and Imodium (loperamide), may help people with diarrhea.”

However, with the risks of medications such as Lotronex, people have sought out alternatives to treat their illness. According to the British medical journal the Lancet, “GlaxoWellcome withdrew Lotronex from the market after the deaths of five patients taking the drug. There had been 49 cases of ischaemic colitis and 21 of severe constipation, including instances of obstructed and ruptured bowel. In addition to the deaths, 34 patients had required admission to hospital and then need surgery.” The same article chided the FDA for their failure to act appropriately in reviewing and approving Lotronex accusing the FDA as being a “servant of industry”.

Alternative therapies are being studied. For example, a recent study presented at the American College of Gastroenterology annual meeting compared a probiotic with a placebo. The study found that those who received the probiotic experienced significantly normalized bowel habits.

Jillian H. had suffered with IBS for a long time. “I've probably tried nearly everything for IBS – it can be such a frustrating illness. I've had IBS for about 10 years. It got really bad about a year ago, to the point I had to change jobs and quit traveling altogether.”

Jillian suffered with her condition for many years and followed a variety of orthodox treatments to improve the problem. “I went to the hospital for all the tests, but as most of us know, there is nothing physicians can really offer for IBS.”

Growing frustrated with little to no progress following conventional approaches, Jillian began seeking out alternatives. “After being frustrated with the hospital experience, I decided to look into herbal remedies, and found some that worked great for me: an herbal aloe drink and probiotic.”

“I honestly don't have IBS symptoms anymore. I haven't had a stomachache or sharp pains in about 6 months now. It took me about 3 weeks – taking the aloe and probiotic twice a day to feel better. I actually feel 'normal' now, which is nothing short of a miracle after how sick I was. For the first time in about 10 years, I've been able to eat cheese, ice cream – things that normally would send me in a tailspin.”

“My aunt, cousin and good friend in Chicago are all now on aloe and probiotics – they all had IBS and have had great results too – no stomach aches and greatly reduced pain, bloating and reflux issues. I strongly suggest these for people who have IBS.”

Shock at rates of obesity in four to five-year-olds

MORE than a third of reception age children in Bredbury Green and Romiley are overweight, and more than half of those are obese, according to statistics released by Stockport Council.

At a recent Social Care and Healthy Scrutiny Committee, councillors were shown the Body Mass Index (BMI) figures for around 3,100 children aged four and five in the borough’s primary schools as it emerged that obesity is thought to cost the Stockport economy £10 million annually, due to spiralling health costs.

The worst results were found in the Bredbury Green and Romiley Ward with 35.1 per cent of reception children overweight and 16.9 per cent of these obese. In the battle of the bulge, 42.5 per cent of boys measured were overweight and 19.2 per cent obese, compared to 28.0 and 14.7 for the girls respectively.

Obesity, defined as excess body fat frequently resulting in a significant impairment of health and longevity, is commonly associated with coronary heart disease, kidney failure, diabetes, osteo-arthritis, back pain, psychological damage and cancer.

Collette Garner, head of St Christopher’s RC Primary School in Romiley, said: "The figures surprise me that they are so high. I personally cannot see the evidence. We take the children’s health and diet very seriously."

Councillor Hazel Lees, representing the Bredbury Green and Romiley ward, said: "I’m really pleased to see that we are getting together to devise an action plan but I’m quite shocked to hear that this area is so badly effected."

The most successful ward in the borough was the North Heatons. Just 8.3 per cent of children were overweight and 1.7 obese - with boys measuring 9.4 per cent overweight and no recorded cases of obesity, and the girls 7.1 and 3.6 respectively.

Janet Hartley, from Broadstone Hall Primary School, Heaton Chapel, said: "We have ‘before school’ clubs with snacks and breakfast to reinforce good habits and increase concentration, along with free keep fit classes and sports after school."

To tackle the local issue of obesity, multiple agencies across the borough have worked together to create a draft action plan to halt the year-on-year rise in obesity among children by 2010.

A council spokesperson said: "We are looking to improve our knowledge of the situation within the community regarding obesity. We will look at getting figures for adults in the near future. The draft action plan is the start of our obesity strategy."

Common Ingredients Found in Fat Burning Supplements

The term commonly used with fat burning supplements is often thermogenics, which as the name suggests, has to do with temperature. These supplements have been shown to help increase the body's temperature enabling the body's ability to burn calories as heat; to be used as energy, thereby preventing them from being stored a fat.

Effective thermogenic supplements are those that contain key ingredients that create a fat burning 'thermogenic' environment by working together and in synergy. Some of these ingredients also aid in reducing appetite and spiking an increase in short-term energy. Such common ingredients are:

Alpha Lipoic Acid

• Prevents cellular damage (from free radicals), reduces oxidative stress, lowers blood sugar
• Increases energy levels
• Powerful insulin potentiator

Banana leaf extract

• Balances blood sugar levels
• Transports blood sugar into the cells and aids in controlling carbohydrate cravings

Cayenne

• Raises the body's metabolic rate

Citrus Aurantium

• A highly effective calorie and fat burner
• Helps to burn fat, and does not affect the central nervous system
• Increases energy levels

CLA - Conjugated Linoleic Acid

• An important fatty acid that has been shown to reduce the body's ability to store fat and increase the body's use of fat for energy.

Coleus Forskohlii

• Accelerates the breakdown of existing fat stores
• Promotes healthy cardiovascular function, lowers elevated blood pressure
• Increases levels of cellular messenger cAMP(cyclicadenosine monophosphatpe) that in turn accelerates the breakdown of existing fat stores

Garcinia Cambogia

• Promotes weight loss and suppresses appetite
• Increases fat oxidation and mobilization
• Promotes glycogen synthesis
• Increases energy levels

Guarana Extract

• When combined with other ingredients it helps to boost their effect
• Has been used for centuries to reduce fatigue and to increase energy levels

Guggul Extract

• Improves thyroid functioning
• Increases fat metabolism

Green Tea Extract

• When combined with the other ingredients it helps to boost their effect to burn fat

• Has been used for centuries to reduce fatigue and to increase energy levels lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels

Hoodia

• The Hoodia molecule, christened P57, fools your brain into believing you are full making it easier to lose that excess weight.

• Pure Hoodia has no known side-effects, it is stimulant free, will not give you the shakes, make your heart race or raise your body temperature.

Konjac root

• is high in fiber, essential for cleaning the digestive system.

• it expands to about 50 times its original volume when used with a large glass of water.

Mucana Puriens

• Improves cognitive function, alleviating depression and improving a sense of well being

• Helps to naturally boost healthy amounts of growth hormone, which promotes lean muscle growth, and in turn a faster metabolism

Naringin

• Extends the half-life of all the other fat burning ingredients, thereby supporting and extending a longer fat burning timeframe

Potassium Pyruvate

• Increases resting metabolic rate

• Facilitates the transport of blood sugar into muscle tissue to increase available energy

Spirulina

• Improves weight loss

Say Goodbye to Dry, Ashy Skin

Rachael Barrett goes in search of the lotions and creams celebs such as Island Stylee's Rachael Stuart, top models Naomi Campbell, Jaunel McKenzie and Grammy winner Sean Paul never leave home without...

Who says that dry flaky skin and ashy elbows and knees are problems only associated with cooler climates? Women the world over (as well as as smart men) struggle to achieve that elusive sheen usually reserved for cosmetic campaign models and softness akin to that of a pampered baby's bottom while magazines often tout the latest and greatest in the way of moisturisers from the bottom of the Red Sea, or elusive ingredient behind some pricey scented bottle. But really, time and time again trial and error proves that the best moisturisers are the old favourites found on pharmacy and supermarket shelves... names that you've heard for years and some natural favourites that don't get enough attention.

Olive Oil - extra virgin

A favourite tool of the ancient Greeks who believed the oil had anti-ageing properties, olive oil is heralded for its ability to give the skin and hair a particularly lustrous sheen without the use of any harmful chemicals. Extra virgin Olive Oil is the purest kind offered on the market. Drizzle a few drops into warm bathwater for a moisturising soak, use a handful as a deep conditioning hair treatment in a hot shower, or simply rub a few drops onto dry skin then cover with a warm towel to let the oil sink in properly. Use sparingly, as a little of the rich oil goes a long way.

Cocoa Butter cream

One of the best local moisturisers come from the multi-talented cocoa plant. While many imported brands offer cocoa butter enhanced products, all woman suggests you reach for the real deal cocoa butter cream, harvested locally.
Compared to the lotion, the cream offers the greatest concentration of the actual cocoa butter, softening skin easily after rubbing it in.

Lubriderm

Their well known advertisements with the rough alligator slinking away hint at the ultra moisturising powers behind this non greasy, scent free formula, and as cliché as this may seem, many dermotoloists do in fact recommend it for extra sensitive dry skin.

Vitamin E oil

A top seller in health food and natural vitamin stores, Vitmain E oil offers the best way to deliver a high concentration of the blemish reducing and skin building vitamin to the skin. The oil is very thick, so rub into small dry, cracked areas like cuticles and heels. If you have any unsightly marks from cuts or bruises applying the oil after showering will reduce any permanent scarring.

Jergens age defying multivitamin lotion

While the classic cherry almond scented formula dominated the early body lotion markets, today new technology has assured that Jergens still tops the market in offering quality skin softening at an affordable price. Their age defying multivitamin formula offers top skin enhancing nutrients that top cosmetic companies retail at three times the price!

Aloe Vera

Often used as a sunburn salve, Aloe Vera gel is a grease free way to add moisture to itchy dry skin common in eczema sufferers or those who have simply been neglecting their moisturising routine. Many lotions and gels advertise that they contain aloe extracts, but for best results reach for our own Jamaica Joe line, that contains 98% of pure gel from local aloe plants.

Vaseline

The dry skin remedy of your grandmother and probably also her mother before her, Vaseline petroleum jelly, while still the greasiest solution, is still one of the all time most economical and successful ways of softening extra tough dry skin. If you've missed a pedicure, slab on thick globs of the gel on your feet and then put on a pair of cotton socks before going to bed. In the morning you'll be amazed at how touchable and soft they've become!

Multi-level marketing sounds great, but ...

Q: Steve: I was recently approached by a co-worker who started a part-time business by joining a company that does something called "network marketing." She took me to an event, and everyone there was so excited about all of the money they are making. I was told that all I had to do was to join, sell some product, and recruit some people in my "downline" and I would be making this kind of money, too. It seems too good to be true. Do you know anything about this type of business?

Alan, Oregon

A: Unfortunately, I do. One of the first businesses I ever got into, in 1985 or so, was a network marketing business (also called multi-level marketing). Like your proposed endeavor, this one seemed to good to be true, too. All we had to do was to recruit people to join below us and sell some of the company's "cutting-edge health products!" Did I mention the products were Aloe Vera creams and lotions?

But the guys who recruited me made the plan seem so foolproof, so simple, and so lucrative, that I would be a fool not to get in, so get in I did. I parted with $499, bought a lot of Aloe Vera products, and started bugging everyone I knew about why they should join this "incredible, ground floor opportunity!"

Pretty soon, not only did I become persona non- grata among my pals, but also I ended up with a lot of unused Aloe Vera in my garage. I bet if I look carefully, I might still find some in an old box somewhere. I have since been approached several times to buy or sell everything from personal electronics to vitamins via network marketing.

So yes, I am familiar with multi-level marketing and admittedly am jaded about it.

Now, network marketing is certainly a legitimate business model, if done right. Everything from laundry detergent to protein bars are sold this way, and yes, some people make a lot of money.

A good multilevel marketing company offers many possible benefits:
• Established products
• Low cost of entry
• Training and support
• A bonus plan
• Resources and materials
• Growth potential

The idea is that the company brings in independent sales representatives to start sales teams, and those people bring in people below them, hence the term "downline." Every time someone in a downline sells something, everyone above gets a small share of the commission.

The pitch is usually something like this: Just bring in two people, have each of them bring in two people, and so on and in only, say, four generations, you will have 30 people in your downline! (2 + 4 + 8 + 16 = 30.)

But the problem as I see it is two-fold. First, while everyone gets excited about the idea of recruiting people to join below them and the geometric growth that can occur as a result, the fact remains that eventually, at some time, somewhere, somebody will actually have to sell the company's product to someone.

Typically, people get sold on the idea that by simply recruiting people, riches can be had. The fact that someone has to actually peddle the products is somehow lost in the shuffle, or if it's not, it will be that poor schnook down the line who will have to do the heavy lifting. But if your line is ever going to make money, you will have to do more than recruit new people, the whole team will have to sell Aloe Vera.

The second problem is that all of us have a limited amount of people we know well enough to whom we can pitch a business opportunity, and make no mistake about it, pitching the business is the name of the game. So if you want to get into network marketing, be prepared to try and sell people you love a business they may not want. And after you barrel through your friends, your acquaintances and co-workers will become your next target. After that, who?

All I can say is that I hope you have better luck than I did.

Noni Juice Might Lower Smokers' Cholesterol

THURSDAY, March 2 (HealthDay News) -- Claims that it can ward off any number of ailments have helped boost annual sales of Tahitian noni juice into the billions, and now a new study suggests the drink may, in fact, help lower cholesterol.

But skeptics note that the small study -- like most others looking at the product -- was funded by the maker of the juice, and they are calling for a larger, independent clinical trial.

The findings were to be presented Thursday at the American Heart Association (AHA) annual conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention, in Phoenix.

"Are the findings a reason for people to drink noni juice? I don't think that there is an answer to that," said Dr. Stephen Barrett, a retired psychiatrist and founder of Quackwatch, which has investigated the unfounded claims of noni juice distributors in the past.

While not dismissing the idea that the juice, made from the bumpy fruit of the Polynesian noni plant, might have some heart-healthy effects, Barrett added, "You'd want to have someone who's independent, at some point, do the study."

The study's lead researcher, Dr. Mian-Ying Wang of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, defended her team's work. She pointed out that the study was a double-blinded, placebo-controlled effort that met the standards of the college's Institutional Review Board.

Wang drinks noni juice daily. She claims it helps her feel more energized and concentrate better, and has even thickened her hair. "I do recommend it," she said, "and several of my coworkers drink noni juice for their cholesterol -- it controls it very well."

Noni juice does have an ancient history among the peoples of the South Pacific, where Wang said, "it has been used for over 2,000 years as a traditional medicine." She said her previous research has found the juice does contain a very high level of disease-fighting antioxidants.

However, the bitter-tasting beverage has had a more checkered history in the United States, with some distributors having claimed it cured everything from arthritis to cancer to AIDS. In 1998, unsubstantiated claims led attorney generals in Arizona, California, New Jersey and Texas to levy a $100,000 fine against one major noni juice maker, Utah-based Morinda Inc., ordering it to cease making such claims.

Morinda owns Tahitian Noni International (TNI), which funded Wang's study. However, according to the company's Web site, the company now claims only that the juice is "rich in antioxidants that promote wellness." They go on to say that "TNI and its distributors do not claim that noni cures cancer or any other ailments." In a statement, TNI said its global sales had reached $3 billion by 2005.

In the Illinois study, Wang's team compared blood levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides (fats) in 132 smokers. Twenty-six of the participants drank a harmless placebo mixture while 106 drank one ounce to four ounces daily of TNI's brand of noni juice (mixed with grape and blueberry juice for palatability).

Wang said the study focused on smokers because their cholesterol levels tend to be higher than those of nonsmokers, and they are at higher risk for heart disease.

At the end of the month-long study, noni drinkers saw their total cholesterol drop from an average of 235.2 mg/dL to 190.2 mg/dL, while their triglycerides declined from 242.5 mg/dL to 193.5 mg/dL.

Although the data was not included in the heart association meeting data, Wang said levels of LDL "bad" cholesterol showed a "trend toward decreasing" in noni drinkers, while levels of HDL "good" cholesterol rose 17 percent to 20 percent.

However, not everyone was impressed with the findings. Dr. Jeffrey Galpin is an assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles who has investigated claims made by noni juice distributors in the past.

Like Barrett, he said that the remedy "may well have benefits, but somebody -- and not the company -- is going to have to do studies that are well-controlled with no conflict of interest."

He also pointed to one small, independent study that found that overindulgence in the juice could actually be dangerous. "A couple of people used this juice for a few months and drank a ton of it -- one of them ended up needing a liver transplant and the other had some kind of related hepatitis," he said.

He and Barrett also noted that the four-week study says little about the juice's ability to benefit users over the long term.

Then there's the juice's expense.

"If there are antioxidants in noni juice, prove to me that it's worth $35 for 24 ounces -- instead of just eating some [antioxidant-rich] blueberries," Galpin said.

Barrett agreed, noting that drinking three to four ounces of noni juice a day would cost consumers the same as taking a prescription statin medication, "which we know works." Beyond that, Barrett said, "we know that if you simply eat a healthy low-fat diet, your cholesterol level drops really fast."

Galpin also questioned the AHA's decision to promote the small, company-funded study in its press kit for this week's meeting. "That shocked me," he said.

But Dr. Barbara Howard, vice chairwoman of the AHA's Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism Council, defended the association's choice. "There's a huge focus on these kinds of supplements nowadays, and the AHA has made it clear that these are all basically unproven and need a lot more research," she said. "This [choice] doesn't in any way reflect our judgment of the quality of the study."

According to Wang, skeptics may soon get what they wish for, anyway.

"Based on this data," she said, "I'm going to submit a [proposal for a] bigger clinical trial to the AHA, to try and get funding." At the same time, the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine is currently recruiting participants for its own federally funded, phase 1 clinical trial focused on the juice's effectiveness against cancer.

Study Predicts Rise in Overweight Children

By DANICA KIRKA, Associated Press Writer

LONDON - The number of overweight children worldwide will increase significantly by the end of the decade, and scientists expect profound impacts on everything from public health care to economies, a study published Monday said.

Nearly half of the children in North and South America will be overweight by 2010, up from what recent studies say is about one-third, according to a report published by the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity.

In the European Union, about 38 percent of all children will be overweight if present trends continue — up from about 25 percent in recent surveys, the study said.

"We have truly a global epidemic which appears to be affecting most countries in the world," said Dr. Philip James, chairman of the International Obesity Task Force and author of an editorial in the journal warning of the trend.

The percentages of overweight children also are expected to increase significantly in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Mexico, Chile, Brazil and Egypt have rates comparable to fully industrialized nations, James said.

He estimated that, for example, one in five children in China will be overweight by 2010.

"They're being bombarded like they are in the West to eat all the wrong foods. The Western world's food industries without even realizing it have precipitated an epidemic with enormous health consequences," he said.

James said living in isolated areas was no longer a safeguard to securing quality of life or traditional eating habits.

He said children are "being exposed to the world's marketing might," arguing that governments should step in. "There needs to be a ban on all forms of marketing, not just telvision adverts."

Researchers analyzed a variety of published medical reports on obesity from 1980 to 2005 and World Health Organization data. They were able to track the growth rate of obesity in school-age populations in 25 countries and in preschoolers in 42 countries.

Researchers concluded that the prevalence of childhood obesity increased in almost all the countries for which data were available, a trend fueled by more sedentary lives and the increasing availability of junk food, among other factors.

The public health consequences of the trend alarm experts, said Dr. Phillip Thomas, a surgeon unconnected to the study who works extensively with obese patients in the northwest England city of Manchester.

Because obese children tend to carry the problem into adulthood, Thomas and other doctors say they will tend to be sicker as they get older, suffering from heart disease, stroke and other ailments stemming from their weight.

"This is going to be the first generation that's going to have a lower life expectancy than their parents," Thomas said. "It's like the plague is in town and no one is interested."

Another doctor who examined the journal report was Dr. Brian McCrindle, a childhood obesity expert and professor of pediatrics with a pediatric hospital in Toronto.

He warned that the looming problem must be addressed.

"The wave of heart disease and stroke could totally swamp the public health care system," he said.

He warned that lawmakers had to take a broader view of the looming problem — and consider doing things such as banning trans fats and legislating against direct advertising of junk food toward children.

"It's not going to be enough any more just to say to the consumer 'You have to change your behavior,'" he said.

Genetic background to ravages of obesity

Why do some overweight people stay healthy (apart from possible musculo-skeletal disorders) while obesity in other individuals leads to complications like diabetes and cardiovascular disease? The explanation lies in the genes. Scientists at the Department of Clinical Sciences at Lund University in Malmö, Sweden , have identified a gene that exists in a special variant in most overweight people, a variant that makes fatty acids “leak” into the blood stream, where they don’t belong.

Fat is constantly being metabolized by the body-being produced, broken down, and rebuilt. Adiponutrin is a protein that takes part in this process. But overweight people often have a variant of the adiponutrin gene that causes the amounts of this protein to be lower than normal.

“Adiponutrin is supposed to constitute a kind of ‘corset’ that keeps fat in its place in fatty tissue. If the protein doesn’t do its job after a sugar-rich meal, fatty acids leak into the blood instead. The high content of fat in the blood then affects the cardiovascular system, the liver, muscles, and pancreas,” explains Associate Professor Martin Ridderstråle.

The difference between obese people who are healthy and those who develop diabetes and cardiovascular disorders may be the result of their having different variants of the adiponutrin gene and some other genes, he believes. The research team in Malmö is therefore busy developing a map of genes that can show what variants of key genes function as protection and as risk factors, respectively, in connection with these diseases.

“In the future this kind of mapping of an obese patient may be of significance in treatment. Certain medications, for example, might be more appropriate for people with certain gene variants. This opens the possibility of tailoring treatment to each individual,” says Martin Ridderstråle.

The research team’s findings on the adiponutrin gene are described in an article in the latest issue of the internationally recognized journal Diabetes.

Overweight kids on the rise

London - The number of overweight children worldwide will sharply increase by the end of the decade, with scientists predicting profound impacts on everything from public health care systems to the economy, a study published on Monday said.

In North and South America, it is estimated that just under half of the region's children will be overweight by 2010, up from about 28%. In EU countries, about 38% of all children will be overweight should present trends continue - up from about 25% in recent surveys, according to a report published by the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity.

"We have truly a global epidemic which appears to be affecting most countries in the world," said Dr Philip James, the chairperson of the International Obesity Task Force and the author of an editorial in the journal warning of the trend.

Rates of overweight children are expected to rise significantly in the Middle East and Latin America as well as in Southeast Asia and the west Pacific. Mexico, Chile, Brazil and Egypt have rates comparable to the fully industrialised countries in the world, James said.

Researchers analysed reports from 1980 to 2005 as well as World Health Organisation data. They found data for trends over time covering school-age populations in 25 countries and preschool-age children in 42 countries.

Obesity fuelled by junk food

Researchers concluded that the prevalence of childhood overweight increased in almost all the countries for which data were available - a trend fuelled by the increasing availability of junk food, more sedentary lives and range of other factors.

The study also detected sharp increases in obese or severely overweight children. The study forecast that the proportion of children afflicted will nearly double in Europe and the Middle East by the end of the decade. In the Americas, that figure will hit 15.2%, up from just under 10%.

The public health consequences of the trend alarm experts, said Dr Phillip Thomas, a surgeon unconnected to the study who works extensively with obese patients in the northwestern English city of Manchester.

Because obese children tend to carry the problem into adulthood, Thomas and other doctors say those affected now will tend to be sicker as they get older, suffering from heart disease, stroke and other ailments related to being overweight.

"This is going to be the first generation that's going to have a lower life expectancy than their parents," Thomas said. "It's like the plague is in town and no one is interested."

Food industry not responsive to obesity, claims report

By not doing enough to tackle the growing obesity crisis, the food and beverage industry is storing up problems for the future, claims a new report.

According to Obesity concerns in the food and beverage industry from UK-based Ethical Investment Research Services (EIRIS), the food industry, while adamant that is not to blame for customers weight problems, must accept that significant damage will be done if it is not seen to be responding to the problem.

"Our research revealed little evidence of obesity-related improvement targets and key performance indicators from the multi-national food and beverage firms we analysed," said report author and EIRIS research analyst Heleen Bulckens.

"Food and drink producers are waking up to the business risks associated with obesity, but significant challenges remain."

The report identified three main non-financial risks for food and beverage producers in relation to the obesity crisis. These are changes in the regulatory environment (including rules on advertising to children and food labelling), litigation and brand risk and consumer resistance.

The study also analysed the food and beverage industry's response to the challenges presented by the growing obesity problem. While some food companies recently hit the headlines with plans for a voluntary labelling system, the report says that differences remain in the approach of multinationals to the health crisis and the associated risks posed to their businesses.

The report also found that although a number of positive steps have been taken, producers are not yet doing enough to manage their risks. The report analysed six companies: Cadbury-Schweppes, The Coca-Cola Company, Kraft Foods, McDonalds, PepsiCo and Unilever.

Of the six companies analysed McDonalds and Unilever were judged to be the slowest to adapt. They were assessed to have only limited systems in place to manage their social, environmental and ethical risks in relation to obesity.

Cadbury Schweppes, The Coca-Cola Company, Kraft Foods and PepsiCo all achieved an intermediate rating, though significant differences exist within the individual criteria used to assess the firms.

Cadbury Schweppes however scored highly for its responsible advertising / marketing to children, with McDonalds scoring lowest on this criterion. However, McDonalds was one of only two of the six companies - along with Unilever which explicitly acknowledged their role in addressing childhood obesity.

This is a crisis set to grow and grow. The incidence of childhood obesity grew from 9.6 per cent in 1995 to 13.7 per cent in 2003 in the UK alone. EU figures estimate that around 14 million EU children are currently overweight or obese, of which more than three million are obese.

Obesity now costs the NHS around £ 1.6 billion a year and the UK economy a further £ 2.3 billion of indirect costs. If this trend continues, the annual cost to the economy could be £ 3.6 billion a year by 2010.

EIRIS provides independent research into corporate social, environmental and ethical performance.

Sweden to Screen Four-Year-Olds for Obesity

Medical professionals said on Monday that Sweden will begin screening all four-year-olds for obesity in an attempt to curb health risks linked to the increased incidence of overweight children.

Claude Marcus, the head of the national center for child obesity at Stockholm’s Karolinska Hospital, told the news agency AFP that ”There is now a national recommendation to all pediatricians to register BMI (the body mass index) in four-year-olds.”

He added that ”The prognosis for children who are overweight is getting worse and worse. They’re having a harder time losing the weight once they gain it, so it’s important to identify the problem as early as possible.”

In addition to registering Swedish four-year-olds’ height and weight development, pediatricians will be asked to survey their BMI, which measures the relative percentages of fat and muscle mass in the body by dividing weight in kilos by height in meters and which is considered the best index for obesity.

According to Carl-Erik Flodmark, head physician at the child obesity center in Skåne in southern Sweden, ”In most children, weight problems won’t surface until later, but by checking four-year-olds we hope to find people who are especially at risk, who are genetically predisposed to become overweight.”

The move to screen BMI in four-year-olds follows a slew of reports showing an increased incidence of Sweden’s traditionally healthy children being overweight or obese.

Two separate surveys of BMI in Stockholm’s seven-year-olds in 1989 and 2003, revealed for instance that the number of overweight children soared from eight to 21 percent.

Obesity 'raises crash death risk'

Male drivers who are involved in a car crash are more likely to die if they are obese, a US study suggests.

The Milwaukee team says this may be due to the driver's greater momentum in a crash and because of the effect obesity has on the body's ability to recover.

But the bodies of moderately overweight men appear to cushion the blow, reports the American Journal of Public Health.

The authors said their findings, based on crash data involving 22,000 people, had implications for vehicle design.

The team from the Injury Research Centre of the Medical College of Wisconsin looked at information on 22,000 people from a nationwide crash data collection programme sponsored by the US Department of Transportation.

The fatality rate for motor vehicle crashes was 0.87% for male drivers and 0.43% for women drivers.

The team found that male drivers who had a body mass index that was either higher than 35 or lower than 22 had a "significantly increased risk of death" compared to those with an intermediate body mass index (BMI).

BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres and is a standard way of assessing whether a person is underweight, overweight or within a healthy weight range.

Lead author Professor Shankuan Zhu said: "The increased risk for death due to motor vehicle crashes associated with a high BMI may be caused by some combination of momentum effects, comorbidities (side effects) of obesity, and emergency post-operative treatment problems among the obese.

"Furthermore, obesity imparts anatomical and physiological changes that may either protect or interfere with the body's response to injury."

He said the increased risk for those with a BMI lower than 25 may be because they lack some fat which could provide a cushion effect and absorb some of the energy of the crash.

"It may also be because the reason they are thin is because they have some underlying disease," he added.

But there was no significant link between BMI and women drivers' risk of death, the researchers found.

Adverse risks

They suggest the reasons for gender difference in BMI and motor vehicle fatality might be due in part to the different male and female body shapes.

The team argues that its research highlights another major health risk associated with obesity among men and may help the identification of high-risk drivers.

They also argue it could have implications for traffic safety policy and motor vehicle design.

A spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said the research was interesting.

"However, it would be a very costly process to have a car modelled on the person's shape to make it as safe as possible - that's really a bespoke car and would take a lot of money and effort to produce," he said.

"It would be preferable to try to stop people having car accidents in the first place."

Dr Colin Waine, chairman of the National Obesity Forum, said the research reiterated the fact that obesity is related to over 40 conditions that affect morbidity, mortality and quality of life.

He added: "People who are obese probably have an adverse risk profile and as such are less able to withstand adverse effects on the body and serious injury."

Food Fight: Scientists are taking on sodas as the `cigarettes' of obesity

The Associated Press

UNDATED A fight is brewing between health researchers and the beverage industry over whether a warning should be put on soda.

University of North Carolina scientist Barry Popkin is pushing for a warning label for sodas, linking their consumption to obesity. He says the nation got heavier at the same rate soda became more popular.

Kevin Keane of the American Beverage Association says it's unfair to hold one product responsible for the nation's obesity problem. He says children are much less active now than a few years ago.

Popkin is also in favor of a soda tax, like the one on tobacco. He says studies involving the links of soda and obesity are at the same stage as studies on tobacco and health problems several years ago, when those warning were issued. The beverage spokesman says linking drinking soda with smoking cigarettes is "absolutely ridiculous."

Child obesity levels expected to soar by 2010

By Patricia Reaney

London - Childhood obesity rates will soar dramatically in most parts of the world by the end of the decade and raise the risk of diabetes in young people, health experts said on Monday.

By 2010 the number of overweight and obese youngsters in the European Union nations is expected to hit 26 million. An estimated 20 000 obese youngsters will have type 2 diabetes, a previously adult disease.

Over a million children will show signs of high blood pressure, raised cholesterol levels or early indicators for cardiovascular disease.

Double the level of earlier surveys

"The obesity estimates are very cautious, but extremely worrying," said Dr Tim Lobstein, of the International Obesity TaskForce (IOTF), who analysed worldwide trends in childhood obesity.

"When we looked at the overweight it was astonishing to see that nearly half of children in both North and South America could be overweight in just four years time."

Changes in diet, a decrease in physical activity and too much time spent in front of computer or television screens have been blamed for the growing number of overweight children worldwide.

North America, Europe and part of the Western Pacific have the highest prevalence of overweight children at about 20 to 30 percent.

"It is amazing and impressive and devastating," Professor Philip James, chairperson of the IOTF, said in an interview referring to the research.

Decrease in physical activity

"They have put in a much fuller collection of information than we have ever seen before. They have also looked specifically to see how fast the epidemic is going and projected it forwards."

The research reported in the new International Journal of Pediatric Obesity shows 10 percent of children in Europe, nearly double the level of earlier surveys, will be obese by 2010.

In the Middle East the figure is expected to rise to 11,5 percent while in North and South America the obesity level in children may climb to 15,2 percent.

The Asian average could triple from 1,5 to 5,3 percent. The researchers said estimates for Africa are unavailable because of insufficient data.

"The prevalence of childhood obesity is increasing in almost all industrialised countries for which data are available, and in several lower-income countries," Lobstein and his co-author Dr Youfa Wang from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, said in the report.

The researchers, who used World Health Organisation data and published research to estimate overweight and obesity prevalence levels for 2006 and 2010, said urgent action is needed to stop the rising trend.

"We can only do this if we seriously address the need to cut down the consumption of extra empty calories in high fat and high sugar good products, and do much more to improve children's opportunities to be active," Lobstein added in a statement.

Soda Targeted in Fight Against Obesity

By MARILYNN MARCHIONE AP Medical Writer

Mar 5, 2006 (AP)— Low-fat, low-cal, low-carb. Atkins, South Beach, The Zone. Food fads may be distracting attention from something more insidiously piling on pounds: beverages.

One of every five calories in the American diet is liquid. The nation's single biggest "food" is soda, and nutrition experts have long demonized it.

Now they are escalating the fight.

In reports to be published in science journals this week, two groups of researchers hope to add evidence to the theory that soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks don't just go hand-in-hand with obesity, but actually cause it. Not that these drinks are the only cause genetics, exercise and other factors are involved but that they are one cause, perhaps the leading cause.

A small point? In reality, proving this would be a scientific leap that could help make the case for higher taxes on soda, restrictions on how and where it is sold maybe even a surgeon general's warning on labels.

"We've done it with cigarettes," said one scientist advocating this, Barry Popkin at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Comparing soda and obesity to tobacco and lung cancer is a baseless crusade, industry spokesmen say.

"I think that's laughable," said Richard Adamson, a senior science consultant to the American Beverage Association. Lack of exercise and poor eating habits are far bigger contributors to America's weight woes, he said.

"The science is being stretched," said Adam Drewnowski, director of nutritional sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle. He owns stock in beverage companies and has done extensive research in the field, much of it financed by industry but also some by government.

However, those making the case against soda include some of the nation's top obesity researchers at prestigious institutions like Harvard and Yale.

"There are many different lines of evidence, just like smoking," said Dr. David Ludwig, a Harvard pediatrician who wants a "fat tax" on fast food and drinks.

Beverage companies seem worried. Some are making sodas "healthier" by adding calcium and vitamins, and pushing fortified but sugary sports drinks in schools that ban soda. This could help them duck any regulations aimed at "empty calorie" drinks, said Jennifer Follett, a USDA nutritionist at the University of California in Davis.

"Even defining 'milk' is getting tough these days," with so many flavored varieties and sweetened liquid yogurts, she complained. "It tastes like you're sucking on ice cream."

Proving that something causes disease is not easy. It took decades with tobacco, asbestos and other substances now known to cause cancer, and met strong industry opposition. It would be especially tough for a disease as complex as obesity.

‘There’s no quick fix for weight loss, and keeping it off’

Weight loss diets continue to come and go in popularity.
Often the “latest” diets are really old fad diets rewritten to make a comeback.
Just a few examples of some current fad diets are Dr. Atkin’s New Diet Revolution, The South Beach Diet, Eat Right for Your Type, and Dr. Phil’s The Ultimate Weight Solution.
All these diets promise:
“It’s not a diet but a way of life.”
“Food is delicious and you won’t be hun
gry.”
“You’re overweight because you eat the wrong food (not too much food).”
“You will lose weight because you will eat the right foods (not less food).”
And “the diet will prevent major diseases.”
While many of these diets do make some good points, they tend to oversimplify nutritional advice and miss the real issues in achieving and maintaining long-term weight loss and healthy eating.
Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for achieving successful weight loss and, above all, keeping it off.
People who have successfully maintained their weight loss have done it with hard work and by avoiding fad diets.
Recommendations that promise a quick fix — the old adage “if it sounds too good to be true, it often is” — are a sure sign of a fad diet.
A sensible diet plan would never promise quick results with minimal effort.
Avoid diets that eliminate whole groups of foods or have lists of “good” and “bad” foods.
All foods can be sensibly worked into your diet. Food is not just fuel for our bodies. It is a huge part of our culture, celebrations and everyday lives and should be enjoyed.
The diet advice of avoiding anything white — white bread, white pasta, white rice, sugar — is oversimplified advice.
Yes, whole-grain bread, pasta and rice are healthier because they have more fiber to help us stay fuller longer, but serving for serving, they have the same number of calories.
It is important to eat a wide variety of foods (including more fruits and vegetables). This will help avoid boredom and provide more vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytochemicals.
No food should be off limits. However, if you know you cannot control your portion sizes with certain foods or they trigger you to overeat, avoid them or eat them when the serving size is limited for you.
Above all, it is the portion sizes of our meals that matter most. Most of us know this, but it is applying it to our lives that is difficult.
We are more social than ever. This makes controlling portion sizes and making the best food choices even more difficult. We eat out more often and have an abundance of food choices in stores and restaurants.
Restaurant portions are often two to three servings in reality. Consumers want to feel we are getting our money’s worth, but unfortunately we are paying for it in our weight and health.
Share your entree or wrap half of it up right away so you’re not tempted to continue to pick.
Lastly, avoid diet plans that help sell a particular product. Again, long term the diet is not teaching you how to eat properly.
Replacing two meals a day with a shake, meal replacement bar, or a bowl of cereal gets boring quickly, and most people cannot stick to the regimen.
There are ways to learn to eat healthier and lose weight that you can live with.
Besides working with a dietitian, diet plans like Weight Watchers and online services eDiets.com are great services in teaching portion control, smarter food choices and flexibility.
However, even with the best diet, exercise is equally important in maintaining weight loss.
Start exercising.
Establish a regular fitness routine that works in your life.
Start walking.
Join a gym.
If that is too overwhelming, start by just moving more.
Get up in between commercials and clean.
Get up to change the channel.
Purposely take the stairs.
Park far away from the store.
Walk out to the mailbox instead of using your car.
Make yourself more active, and you will burn more calories.
Four little words can sum it up: “Move more, eat less” and you will lose weight.
Unfortunately, that advice doesn’t sell books.

Report: Sarah Ferguson in talks for British weight loss reality show

The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, is reportedly in talks with Britain's Channel 4 to serve as host of a reality weight-loss TV program.

The show would have Ferguson, 46, moving in with overweight families and supervising their diet and exercise programs, the Mirror reported Thursday.

"Sarah is very excited about this TV project and she's keen to do it," a Channel 4 source told the Mirror. "She is looking brilliant at the moment. She's lost so much weight in the past and would love to help other families hoping to shed the pounds."

The popular international personality known as "Fergie" earned millions of dollars promoting Weight Watchers and dropped from a size 18 to a size 10.
